Finding a new kind of treatment

On Thursday, I (Morgan) drove to Monticello with my Aunt Vicki. We met my mom, dad, grandma peck and grandpa Peck. All of them had been living in a motel for nearly a week. Three times a day they would drive to Dove Creek Colorado and get treatments from Bruce, who specializes in Bioelectrical Therapy. I know Jade went and experienced it last week and this week was my turn and let me just say... It was CRAZY! It is really hard to explain but I will do my best.
First of all you and Bruce are both connected to electrical currents. He uses Reflexology, A system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, along with the electric currents to find areas on the body that are not acting properly. He feels these areas on your feet to find things that are wrong in the body. The currents will shock him if there is an abnormality.  Once he finds the problem, he uses the meridians in the body to help treat that area. The little shocks help the body to heal itself from the problem. For my mom her treatments are 3 times a day for 20 minutes a time. He holds his hand over each side of her liver for 5 minutes each. Whether this cures her or not, she is finally able to breath adequately and sleep through the night. Our whole family that was there got treatments everyday (but only once). I had a very bad cold and after a day, I was feeling much better. This stuff really works and I had the opportunity to stand in his position and feel what it is like to perform the treatment. It is very odd but if any of this doesn't make sense then google it ha. When Saturday finally came, mom was very anxious to go home and sleep in her own bed.
One major thing that we'll be attempting to change is the diet in the family. We all need to eat better. Lots of fruits and veggies, (green drinks), little dairy, NO sweets and a lot less meats. When I say we, I mean mom but the rest of the family needs to change our ways of eating also. I think dad is dreading to too. It will be quite the challenge.  Mom is going to give herself a good month of eating right and detoxifying her body before even considering surgery. (I don't think she wants to do surgery at all).  So as of right now, the surgery is off unless said otherwise.
Once again... Thanks for all the fasting and prayers! We love you all!

Surgery Cancelled...

Last Wednesday, October 19 mom went in to the Provo Health Department to get 4 shots, doctors orders. The shots consisted of a flu shot (as per order), a pneumonia shot, a HIB shot, and a meningitis shot. She had two sore arms because they gave her two shots in each arm.

On Thursday, I (Jade) went with my parents, grandma & grandpa Peck, my uncle Clay and aunt Teressa to Dove Creek, Colorado. If you don't know where that is at, it is 4 1/2 hours south east of Lehi (an hour past Moab). We went there to a doctor who specializes in Electromagnetic Therapy. He performed a treatment on my mom, dad, grandpa, grandma, myself, and has previously performed a treatment on my aunt and uncle. He first uses his electromagnetic therapy machine to check your feet using reflexology. Then, with the machine, he targets the areas of your body that are not functioning properly. This assists your body to heal itself.

My mom was the first one to get the treatment, then she was not feeling well so she went to the truck to lay down and rest. After everyone else was finished we went to the truck and found out my mom was not feeling well and had flu-like symptoms. She could not hardly eat anything, and her body ached all over but especially ached in her left arm. I would barely touch it and she would wince because of the pain. She did not feel well enough to drive back home, so we rented some motel rooms in Monticello to stay the night. We got up the next morning and went to another appointment for my mom to do another electromagnetic treatment. When we were finished we headed back home. It was a long drive home! Especially for mom because she was still sick.

When we finally got home Dad called Dr. Rich, the Oncologist, to explain that my mom was really sick. Dad asked him what could have caused her to be sick after the vaccinations. The doctor said getting that she was showing normal flu-like side affects after that many shots. My dad was so mad that the doctor would give her a flu shot, that would cause her to have the flu. He still says he would never get a flu shot for 1 million dollars, He absolutely hates them! Moms flu continued to get worse so they decided to go to the hospital. They found out that mom actually has Cellulitis, which is caused by a bacteria on the skin that gets inside the body (through where the shot penetrated). The doctor gave her IV fluids/antibiotics to help her recover.

After several days of feeling really sick, she is now beginning to feel better. Her last IV antibiotic was Monday but she is still taking an oral antibiotic. Mom was suppose to meet with the surgeon yesterday to do some more blood tests and determine if they could still do the surgery. Instead, she ended up calling the office yesterday (Tuesday) to cancel the surgery. She has not felt good about continuing with the surgery at this time, especially with current infection and a compromised immune system. She said "I knew that if I went to meet with the doctor, he would try to persuade me to do the surgery as scheduled. The truth is, I don't feel it is a good idea right now. When I have surgery I want to be as healthy as I can."
So until further notice Surgery has been postponed. We will continue to keep everyone updated.

Schedule for Surgery

Today we went to the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake to meet with the surgeon, Dr. Kim.  We discussed the proceedure for surgery and all of the protocols that go along with it.  We felt good about Dr. Kim and so we scheduled the surgery for Thursday, October 27th.

Just before leaving the center, mom had to go get a CT scan. While in the waiting room me, (Morgan) and dad noticed a ton of un-hung picture frames leaning against the walls. Dad asked a woman in the group what all of the frames were for. She said they were decorating the brand new wing of the Huntsman Center.  Her name is Gayle and she is longtime friends with Karen Huntsman.  As Karen walked by, Gayle introduced us to her. We thanked her for all of the many things her and her family have done to provide proper medical attention, not to mention a comfortable facility, for thousands of suffering people. My mom joined us when she was done with her CT Scan and Karen Huntsman gave mom the biggest hug. No one could even believe that mom had anything wrong with her because she looks so healthy and beautiful. They were so sweet to us and you can tell they were so genuine with their concern and affection. There are so many people out there whom, even if they don't know you, really do wish the best for you. We are so blessed to be surrounded with great people we know who are the same way!

Family Photos

Over conference weekend we had a family friend, Angela McAllister, take our family pictures. She  did a great job! She was so generous to help us on such short notice.
Even though it was short notice, you would never guess  the time and effort that went into picking out our  outfits.  Our front room was full of clothes that we tried to mix and match. Many of Jades friends were here and participated in the little escapade so they know what we are talking about.  Dad and Cam just thought we were crazy:-)

Thank You

We would like to take the time to thank EVERYONE for the love and support you have shown to my mom and our family. Many of you have asked if there is anything you can do. At this time prayers are greatly appreciated:-) Although, we would like to ask if you keep the phone calls, to check on how we are all doing, to the evening time. We still have a business to run, and with all the calls it is hard to get work done, that goes for my dads cell phone as well. Please don't let this note discourage you from calling because we love the concern but just try to call in the evening time.Thank you for everything you do, and again thanks for ALL of the prayers.

It's the Little Miracles that Count

The panel of doctors met to discuss my mom's case along with many others on Wednesday, October 5th. After the panel had met, Dr. Rich had my parents come into his office to discuss the treatment options the doctors came up with. Dr. Rich was happy to inform my parents that as the doctors were discussing my moms case and deciding what to do to give my mom "Quality of Life", a doctor spoke up and announced he knew a doctor that would perform surgery and cut out her tumors. Dr. Rich told my parents that this doctor wanted to meet with them to explain. While meeting with my parents the doctor told my parents that he did his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He claimed the doctor he worked under was "a world class surgeon." and he could easily perform the surgery to remove ALL the tumors. That news has been news that has given us all hope that our mom may survive a lot longer than a year. It is also unbelievable that none of the other doctors in Utah would suggest doing surgery.

The other miracle is, when my parents first met with Dr. Rich and he wanted to put my moms case on the panel to be reviewed, the panel for that week was full. Dr. Rich had the feeling/urgency, we call it the spirit, that he should put my mom on the board that week and bump another persons case to make a spot for my mom. Dr. Rich followed his instincts and went ahead and put my mom's case on the panel. The Doctor who suggested surgery to remove my moms tumors is not usually on that panel, but he was only there for another specific case that day. We are grateful that Dr. Rich listened to the prompting of the spirit, because if he would not have, the doctor who suggested surgery would not have been there the next week.

Since meeting on the panel the doctors have also found a surgeon who has recently moved to Utah from Texas who is willing to perform the surgery. My parents will meet with them on Friday. We will keep you updated.

We are so thankful for these little miracles and we thank you for the prayers in behalf of my mom.

Our Shocking Diagnosis

On September 27, 2011 our mom, Rialeen, was diagnosed with Pancreatic Endocrine Neoplasm Cancer, the tumor itself is known as an Islet Cell Tumor of the Pancreas. We will shorten it to Pancreatic Cancer. This type of cancer is very rare, and there is not a whole lot of information about this type of pancreatic cancer.

A few weeks earlier Rialeen noticed a lump up by the left side of her rib cage on her stomach. She had been working out a lot and she was hoping it was her abs getting stronger, but she thought it was weird that it was only on one side and not the other. Dad thought she should get it checked out, but mom just thought he worried too much, like he always does, and that it would go away. Meanwhile, my mom was noticing a decrease in her energy level as she continued to exercise. She went on a walk to my grandma's and back to our house, 4 miles round trip, and she was totally exhausted. She went on a 10 mile bike ride with Jade, and when we were almost done, she commented on how winded she was. It was weird because she always kicks Jade's butt and makes her winded. She was also trying to prepare to hike the back side of Timp with the youth in our ward. The week they were supposed to go it rained out and so they rescheduled for the next week, Sept. 23. A couple days before the 23rd my dad returned back from hunting. Mom told him she was still nervous about the hike. He told her she could not go and she had to go to the doctor. So she made an appointment for Friday the 23rd. She went to the doctor and they ran some blood tests. On Monday they called and told her that her results came back and she had an H-pylori bacteria that causes ulcers in her stomach. Mom thought "this is good news, nothing serious is wrong." The doctor also said he wanted to do an ultrasound to check the lump just to make sure. Mom and dad went to the doctors office the next day, September 27, to have the ultrasound done to check her lump. While performing the ultrasound the doctor noticed abnormalities about the lumps in her stomach. He asked if they would have a CT Scan performed. After the CT Scan was done, they went back to the doctors office where their doctor informed them that mom has pancreatic cancer that has metastasized into her liver. She currently has a tumor on the tail end of her pancreas, and multiple tumors on her liver: one the size of a softball, a tennis ball, two the size of golf balls, and other smaller ones.

Mom and dad met with two oncologists who said that her type of pancreatic cancer is neither curable nor operable. It is not curable because this particular type of cancer does not respond to chemo or radiation very well. It is not operable because the pancreatic tumor is very close to a major artery. Doctor Rich said that he would present her case to a board of doctors to determine what type of treatment they are going to perform to "make her comfortable to ensure quality of life."
